THE FIRST RADIANT OPERATING THEATRE CARRIED OUT IN ITALY AT BRONI-STRADELLA
The new Hospital at Broni-Stradella is the forerunner for the technologies employed

The Lombary Region together with the Pavia presidium is proud to be in the van of progress when talking about rules and projects carried out within the health field.

The project was developed by the Studio Calvi in Pavia with a very pragmatic and innovative attitude by addressing many debates surrounding the medical environment.

The Hospital built almost entirely by the Scalvi Costruzioni Generali Srl, is made of two main blocks aligned and oriented so that they have an “L” shape and is divided on 4 floors. The operating theatre is situated at the basement of the hospital.

Energy savings according to national rules which have been in force since year 2008, have been made possible by carrying out thermic and acoustic insulation on the façade of the building and by creating the first operating theatre in Italy, entirely made of demountable metal radiant partition walls.

Besides dividing spaces, the demountable metal radiant partition walls, heat and cool a total of 800 sq. meters guaranteeing energy saving and a higher comfort for both medical staff and patients.
To ensure high levels of asepsis of the operating ambience the rooms are kept constantly ventilated.

Usually the temperature detected in the operating room differs largely from the environment and this often causes discomfort. The problem has been solved by separating the ventilation system from the heating one. The radiant walls are responsible for the latter one. By doing so the air put into circulation does not get used for heating or cooling but is considered primary air.

The broad vertical surface of the radiant walls are kept at a suitable temperature for the operating theatre and thanks to the radiation system it is possible to obtain an ideal environment for both medical staff and patients also due to the ventilation system used. The main feature of the radiating system depends on exploiting the broad surface and low temperature which characterizes it in order to avoid convective movement.
Furthermore the low temperature necessary for the functioning of the radiating system guarantees meaningful energy saving compared to traditional systems.
